We are a small vegetable, fruit, mushroom, and flower farm located in Monterey County looking for an Assistant Farm Manager with a primary focus on flowers and soil fertility. As with anything, we are flexible and mostly want to find the right team player to come join our farm, however the ideal candidate would spend 40% of their time as a flower farmer / florist, 40% of their time managing our fertility program (vermicompost, compost tea, soil food web, etc), and 20% of their time with other efforts that support the overall success of the farm. Over the last 3 years during the pandemic we have transformed a blank canvas of a horse ranch into a highly diverse farm, orchard, ranch, and garden space.
We offer year round employment, competitive pay, and a generous benefits package. The Assistant Farm Manager will report to the Ranch Director and work closely with the Farm Manager for the collaborative success of the farm to achieve its goals. The farm’s goals are primarily two fold:
1. To produce a large diversity of high-quality, organically grown, clean, nutrient-dense foods and other farm products to meet the ongoing demands of the property owners and future farm clientele.
2. To maintain a beautiful ranch and farm property. Not only are we creating amazing products, but we are creating a cultivated ecology and farm campus that celebrates natural aesthetics and life cycles.
The Assistant Farm Manager will be tasked with managing a few different programs on the farm, including the cut flower program, the fertility operations (vermicomposting and compost tea programs to start with), and hopefully our block of juvenile blueberry bushes. The position requires high-energy, excellent communication skills and the ability to keep up with a busy and diverse schedule. All employees must exercise good judgment and discretion in handling confidential matters as the farm is also home to several residents. They will honor and uphold the privacy of the property owners and additionally they will pride themselves with integrity and honesty.
The Assistant Farm Manager is expected to work with the rest of the farm management team to focus on reaching the infrastructure and programmatic goals as well as managing the daily operations for the different production goals. There will be times when working alone will be necessary and there will be times where working as a tight knit team will be necessary. They will be responsible for planning and performing duties related to the diverse activities required and will work with the Ranch Director and the rest of the farm management team to clarify weekly and daily schedules and intentions.
Our farm cultivates a diverse variety of crops including vegetables, flowers, fruits, olives, mushrooms, eggs, value-added products, and also has a diversity of livestock. We grow within a variety of different methods, from bio-intensive, well manicured market garden beds, to diverse sprawling perennial food forests with tractor cultivated ally crops between the young orchard rows. We are in the process of building the onsite infrastructure to allow for our employees to thrive in their crafts and careers, including a flower workshop, an onsite processing kitchen, a greenhouse, a mechanical shop, and wash pack facility.
