Job Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Manager of Editorial Communications! The Manager of Editorial Communications provides high-quality creative services to meet critical communications goals through an assortment of publications, electronic communications, and web and social-media sites, and assists in event promotion for the College of Arts and Sciences. Specific functions include serving as managing editor of the college's print and digital editions, project management, writing and editing, hiring and managing writers and other staff, development and maintenance of web pages, posting to social-media sites, design and distribution of brochures, invitations and electronic newsletters, and creation of other materials to support college programs and special events. The Manager of Editorial Communications is expected, moreover, to strive to understand the ways in which the portfolio of A&S communications can be optimized, revamped reframed or otherwise improved so as to help advance the strategic goals and initiatives of the college and the university.

The position works as part of a team but is an individual contributor expected to take responsibility for a variety of tasks or projects, many of which require advance planning, coordination, research, evaluation, graphic design, writing and editing skills. The position interacts with departments in the college and with various academic programs and research centers, Boulder campus services and outside vendors.

The Manager of Editorial Communications reports to the Assistant Dean for Communications and manages and collaborates with other communications professionals. The position is a key part of the Arts and Sciences Communications team.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Managing

Hiring and managing the communications team's writing staff, which includes:

  • Writers who are members of the university staff.
  • Writers who perform writing and editing services on a contractual "free-lance" basis.
  • Paid student interns who report and write for the A&S magazine.

Writing and Editing

  • Reporting, writing, and editing tasks include but are not limited to writing news or feature stories in the A&S magazine, editing news and feature stories written by other members of the communications team and by student interns and freelance writers, and seeking, proposing and developing story ideas from a range of sources.
  • Writing and editing promotional, marketing and other materials for the college.

Graphic and Web Design for Marketing Communications

  • Serve as an integral part of the decision-making process for upcoming projects, services and direction that have e-media components.
  • Coordinate the development, implementation and timeline of website projects, i.e., redesigning the A&S faculty and staff website.
  • Gather and analyze user stats to determine use patterns for usability improvements.
  • Design and develop user-centric information architecture for websites and web applications.
  • Provide photography, illustration and video services at the direction of the Director of Communications and External Relations.

Web, Broadcast Email and Social Media Maintenance

  • Serve as primary User Experience (UX) expert in the college.
  • Assume responsibility for updating and enhancing the college website and the A&S magazine website.
  • Make content updates to the various internal and external Dean’s Office websites, such as names, units, policies, documents, etc.
  • Perform ongoing web maintenance by making sure all A&S website pages function properly and are up to date.
  • Manage the web, print, and media services for the Dean’s Office.
  • Develop electronic newsletters and invitations as part of Arts and Sciences Communications team.
  • Develop multimedia enhancements for the college web and social networking sites; coordinate and maintain social networking presence to meet critical communication goals.
  • Provide technical training to faculty and staff members if needed.
  • Develop communication materials to support and publicize various special events, and assists other team members with planning and coordinating special events.

What You Should Know

  • The work modality for this position is hybrid, with some days remote and some days in-person each week.

What We Can Offer

The annual salary range is $71,500 - $80,000.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute).
  • 5 years of experience in journalism, communications, graphic design or public relations.
  • 5 years of experience with website creation and electronic and print publications.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Adobe applications (lndesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Ability to hand code HTML and CSS.

What You Will Need

  • High level of motivation; excellent written, verbal, and customer service skills; attention to detail.
  • Experience and demonstrated proficiency in writing about complex subjects for a general audience.
  • Experience with programming languages such as PHP, Javascript, etc.
  • Interest in computer technology resulting in the ability to master new applications and technology easily.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Postgraduate degree in a related field, such as communications or journalism.
  • 3+ years of experience managing writers: making assignments, coaching and editing writers.
  • Experience in a higher education environment desired.
