Baltimore Medical System is looking for a Medical Assistant to work at one of our busy and ever-growing community health center locations. Positions are available at either Belair-Edison, Saint Agnes, Rosedale, Highlandtown, or Yard 56 (depending upon current vacancies).

The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for a wide variety of responsibilities, including being cross-trained to perform administrative and clinical duties. The right candidates for BMS are highly motivated, able to maintain a positive attitude, punctual, adaptable, and have a strong will to work.


Hours: Mon: 10 am-7 pm; Tues-Fri.: 8:30 am-5:00 pm


Essential functions:

  • Escorts patients to rooms and takes history and vitals.
  • Prepares patients for procedures.
  • Teaches and demonstrates BMS standards for customer services and acts as a resource person for information on center functions and standard operating procedures.
  • Assists physicians with examinations, and procedures.
  • Cleans exam rooms and equipment and performs sterilization procedures as necessary. Keeps exam rooms properly stocked with medical supplies, forms, and other materials needed.
  • Triages phone calls, document information from patients via telephone and relays information to physicians for a response. Places return calls as directed by physicians.
  • Pulls patient charts for visits and files charts away after visits. Prepares patient's charts before scheduled visits with the required forms and by gathering pertinent medical information Contacts outside medical offices and testing facilities to obtain records for visits as necessary. Prepares charts according to each physician’s individual preference.
  • Schedules all tests and minor procedures, and obtains pre-certification/pre-authorization required by insurance.
  • Calls pharmacies to refill prescriptions under the direction of a physician and obtains authorizations for prescriptions and prescription refills as required by insurance.
  • Completes all necessary documentation during visits.
  • Assists in specimen collection and accurate labeling of specimens.
  • Orders and maintains clinical supplies for the department.
  • Administers testing and injections as ordered by the physician.
  • Works with the center staff to coordinate patient flow and to assure that operations are working smoothly.
  • Precisely enters all scheduling data, demographics, insurance verification, and various additional desk duties.
  • Provides training support for newly hired Medical Assistants.


Licensure / Certification / Registration:

Required: Current CPR/ BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent education and/or experience.

Graduate/certificate of completion from an accredited medical assistant program. A waiver for this requirement may be considered for candidates who have successfully a higher level of medical education (e.g., accredited LPN program, however, are NOT licensed.)


Work Experience:

Required: Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program

Preferred: Three years of medical assistant experience and CMA or RMA certification


To be considered a Certified Medical Assistant, you must have one of the following Certifications in Active Status:

  • RMA administered by American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • CMA administered by the American Association of Medication Assistants (AAMA)
  • CCMA administered by National Healthcare Association (NHA)
  • NCMA administered by National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • American Medical Certification Association accredited by the Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association (CAHEA), Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)
