AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a national service program that focuses on projects aiming to alleviate poverty in communities across the country. VISTA Summer Associates serve as mentors, tutors, and educators to the children participating in Metropolitan Ministries' CREATE Summer Camp. They have a meaningful impact on children by facilitating educational, social-emotional, and recreational activities.

This is not a salaried position; this is a 10 week position that receives a bi-weekly stipend, education award or cash stipend, and other benefits.

Service Term: May 30th, 2023 to August 4th, 2023

Days/Hours: This position is 40 hours/week. These may include early morning, day, and evening hours. VISTA Summer Associates make a full time commitment and due to the short duration of the service term, do not have any available personal days.

Member Duties:

• Learn about CREATE Summer Camp by reviewing Summer Camp activities, policies, partners, and summer schedule.
• Develop, schedule, and deliver lesson plans. Lessons plans will be focused on STEAM activities and Character Development or Substance Abuse Prevention.
• Work alongside Summer Camp staff to facilitate field experiences that enrich lesson plans.
• Work alongside Summer Camp staff to coordinate activities and events with partners.
• Assist in tutoring and mentoring children as needed.
• Track and report attendance and other data as assigned.

Position Requirements and Specifications:

• High school degree required. Experience working with children preferred. Extensive exposure to children's programs highly desirable.
• Be a role model of exemplary behavior for the children, volunteers, and parents. Practice and maintain a safe, healthy, and clean environment.
• Demonstrate flexibility in work schedule to ensure that program needs are being met.
• Requires an understanding of poverty, a high degree of maturity, strong inter-personal skills and the ability to work and communicate with people in a professional and diplomatic manner. Requires sensitivity to issues of faith, culture and other sources of diversity.
• Reliable transportation required.
• Be at least 18 years of age upon start of service.
• Be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or a Lawful Permanent Residents.
• Be able to successfully pass a criminal background check.

Benefits:

• Stipend of $675.08, (pre-tax) paid bi-weekly for term of service for a total of $ $3,375.40 (pre-tax) for the term.
