Children's is searching for a Lead Staff RN . As part of our professional team of clinicians, you will ensure the compassionate, professional delivery of all dialysis-related nursing services in both outpatient and inpatient settings in accordance with standards and hospital policies and procedures. Responsibilities include coordinating/leading daily clinical operational activities of the unit by ensuring that quality care is delivered in an efficient work environment. The dialysis charge nurse will collaborate with the Clinical Supervisor and Manager to maintain an environment that advocates for staff and promotes individual/team engagement through clinical/administrative expertise and professional leadership.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Coordinates/leads daily clinical operational activities of the unit by ensuring that quality care is delivered in an efficient work environment to include:
  • Managing patient flow
  • Balances unit patient care activities while overseeing the delivery of patient care and coordinating outpatient appointments, inpatient needs, and unforeseen events.
  • In times of high census, effectively problem solves and utilizes available resources including clinical supervisor, clinical manager, educator, care coordinators, and/or nephrology providers to maximize patient throughput, while maintaining quality patient care.
  • Maintains constant unit awareness, adjusting patient assignments and directing workflow according to changes in patient acuities/needs and unit activities.
  • Utilizes clinical leadership in ensuring that patient care activities meet established unit/organizational/ practice standards of care through patient/family rounding, communication with healthcare team and in directing and/or assisting in the delivery of clinical patient care.
  • Facilitates communication between healthcare team members/departments in advocating for quality/coordinated patient care, and ensuring that patient/family needs are met.
  • Overseeing staffing processes
  • Coordinates assignments using established staffing levels that match individualized* patient needs with staff competencies, and staff skill mix.
  • *Individualized refers to the patient’s developmental, cognitive, cultural, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational/family influences and physical/medical care needs.
  • Assigns and delegates patient assignments as defined by the Nebraska State Nurse Practice Act, and according to the knowledge and skills of the staff available.
  • Anticipates plans and adjusts staffing needs daily and on a weekly basis, resolves staffing issues as they arise, and updates Clinical Manager daily.
  • Consistently ensures documentation on daily staffing sheets and assignment sheets reflects accurate staffing/patient activity.
  • Works collaboratively with Administrative Coordinator and other unit Charge Nurses in meeting staffing needs, taking accountability for impact of decision on patient care in own unit.
  • Unit staffing is adjusted consistently according to established staffing policies/procedures/guidelines/standards.
  • Unresolved staffing concerns and unique staffing adjustments are appropriately communicated to the Clinical Supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Monitoring unit environment
  • Ensures that staff has the supplies, equipment, information, and resources needed to provide quality patient care in a safe work environment.
  • Assesses unit supplies and equipment needs on a daily basis. Reports correction needs, completes variances and utilizes unit tracking processes for timely resolution of identified needs. Reports unresolved environmental variances to the Clinical Supervisor as necessary.
  • Collaborates with the Clinical Supervisor to maintain an environment that advocates for staff and promotes individual/team engagement through clinical/administrative expertise and professional leadership.
  • Role models, demonstrates and promotes clinical leadership
  • Serves as a clinical/systems expert with nursing and interdisciplinary team member(s) in the assessment, development, implementation, and/or evaluation of the age-specific individualized patient/family-centered plan of care and documented actions.
  • Proactively collaborates with healthcare team, in analyzing data from patient assessments, team/family communication and current clinical situations. Provides direction in prioritizing plans for patient care while considering the potential for complications.
  • Consistently implements the nursing process in accordance with the unit scope of service, policies/procedures, and standards to oversee the care of patients while utilizing critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in assigned area to support quality patient care. Uses discretionary judgment in assessing conflicting priorities and needs.
  • Implements and evaluates nursing actions in accordance with the individualized patient/family plan of care and patient condition/needs in relation to dialysis care.
  • Oversees that the nursing and interdisciplinary plan of care/goals are coordinated, implemented, evaluated, and revised as needed. Identifies the need for interdisciplinary involvement/outside resources and follows through. Uses appropriate resources (CNC, CNS/Educator, PCM, MD, etc) to ensure that clinical outcomes are achieved.
  • Incorporates critical thinking into the delivery of clinical skills and in analyzing patient response to orders, tests, labs, medications, and treatments.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in administering interventions according to identified standards and age specific needs.
  • Provides and/or coordinates with other disciplines patient/family education according to identified care needs, considering assessment of patient/family’s readiness to learn
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Must be able to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature, without loss of efficiency or composure, and be able to perform under stressful conditions when confronted with multiple requests, demonstrating prioritizing skills.
  • Must possess leadership skills in verbal/written communication and organizational management (time management, problem solving, conflict resolution, and knowledge of regulatory agency/HR standards).
  • Must possess influential/motivational leadership skills that drive/develops staff performance.
  • Ability to effectively demonstrate situational power, control, autonomy, and flexibility.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Diploma, Associates, or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of nursing required
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a clinical nurse required, preferably in pediatrics
  • Experience with pediatric patients preferred.
  • Previous experience with EPIC preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a current valid Nebraska RN license/RN Compact license required.
  • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association is required.
  • Current and valid Pediatric Life Advanced Life Support (PALS) required, within 6months of hire.
  • Current and valid certification in Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Non-violent Intervention preferred.
