Job Title: Physicist III

Reports to: Director of Research & Development

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position will conduct research and develop laser optics, remote sensing phenomena and optical subassemblies. Will develop theories on the basis of observation, simulation and experiments, and develop customer specific sensor prototypes and testing environments. They will apply a significant level of knowledge of physics, optical physics and engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments to support future organizational objectives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform complex calculations as part of the analysis and evaluation of data, using computers.
  • Describe and express observations and conclusions in mathematical terms.
  • Analyze research data as required to help understand optical phenomena.
  • Support optical system, opto-mechanical, and opto-electronic modeling, design and trade studies to assess system performance, evaluate technical alternatives, and select optimal approaches.
  • Support the writing of reports and creation of presentations for presentation to customers.
  • Support and operate computer simulations and models of physical data so that it can be better understood.
  • Collaborate with other team members in R & D and Engineering in the design, development, and testing of experimental, industrial, or aerospace instrumentation, and procedures. Determine project plan, personnel needs and assign work to meet deadlines assigned.
  • Understand physics theories and laws and apply them to problems.
  • Help develop manufacturing, assembly, and fabrication processes as required.
  • Electronic Test measurement –using oscilloscopes; multimeters; data acquisition hardware, frame grabbers

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Physics — Knowledge of physical principles, laws, their interrelationships, and applications to understanding fluid, material, and atmospheric dynamics, and mechanical, electrical, atomic and sub- atomic structures and processes.
  • Mathematics — Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, their applications and the ability to use mathematics to solve problems.
  • Engineering and Technology — Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Computers and Electronics — Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
  • Optics – Lens design; optical system design; physical optics; optical modulators; polarization; Lidar, fiber- optics
  • Requires the application of the skills mentioned above and ability to apply these techniques and practices in the performance of their everyday work.
  • Travel is required as necessary <10%
  • Other duties as assigned

  • No supervisory duties

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of optics, detectors and precision instrumentation
  • Skill in remote-sensing laser optics applications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work productively with a variety of experts from various technical fields
  • Ability to integrate and analyze information from multiple diverse sources, identify issues, develop solutions and communicate work direction and strategies
  • Demonstrated expertise in optics, engineering, technical writing and equipment testing

EDUCATION OR FORMAL TRAINING

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in one of the hard sciences such as physics or an applicable engineering discipline required
  • Master’s degree in one of the hard sciences preferred

EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree + 7 – 11 yrs experience in applied physics, material science or related disciplines
  • Or Master’s degree + 5 – 9 yrs experience in applied physics, material science or related disciplines
  • Or Ph.D + 4 – 8 yrs experience in applied physics, material science or related disciplines

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed in an office environment or laboratory.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

  • Working with lab equipment, lasers, and optics.

Pay: $92,000.00 - $128,000.00 per year
