Introduction:

Since 1930, the Louis August Jonas Foundation (LAJF) has run youth leadership programs through Camp Rising Sun in Dutchess County, New York. LAJF has been expanding its program offerings since 2021 beyond Camp Rising Sun. We are seeking a driven Program Director who will join our growing multidisciplinary Program Team to continue bringing our strategic plan (https://www.lajf.org/strategic-plan) to life. The Program Director will join our growing team of program staff, and will be responsible for the development and implementation of some of our new program initiatives while also collaborating on leading our in-person summer camp program, Camp Rising Sun. This role is suited for an experienced program professional who is looking to grow into a program management role.

This is a full time position. From September to June, the Program Director will be required to work in the New York City or Hudson Valley area either remotely or on site at our camp in Clinton, NY. From June to August, the Program Director will be required to reside on campus (Clinton, NY) to be part of the Camp Rising Sun leadership team. This position will report to the Program Team Lead.

In furtherance of the mission, we currently run Camp Rising Sun, The Ethical Leadership Experience, and Young Alums Programming. We are also developing the Gap Year Program and a series of virtual colloquia for teenagers in the NYC area.

Responsibilities:

Year Round:

Working closely with the Program Team Lead and the Program Coordinator this Program Director will be responsible for the delivery and/or development of two of our programs, with the remainder being led by the rest of the program team. Our programs include:

  • Camp Rising Sun, our long-standing full scholarship youth leadership program, which serves 140 teenagers from all over the world. Students spend a month taking on leadership roles, engaging in intensive workshops in the areas of sustainability, racial equity and social justice, the arts, and science/technology, gaining practical insights and around the analytical tools and collaborative skills required to design thoughtful solutions to some of today’s most pressing social challenges.
  • The Gap Year Program, which is under development and scheduled to pilot in Spring 2024. This program will welcome 12-20 18-25 year olds to our campus for a 6-8 week Gap Year Program focused on ethical leadership.
  • The Ethical Leadership Experience, our 14-day fee-based virtual program for teenagers from all around the world, which serves 50-80 students per summer and offers a highly interactive exploration of ethical leadership, cultural identity, justice, action, and imagination. This program has been successfully running since 2020.
  • The Colloquium Program whichbuilds on our successful virtual intensives and will be piloted in Fall 2023 to offer a diverse community of promising students from the NYC area a highly interactive exploration of ethical leadership, cultural identity, justice, action, and imagination, with an emphasis on promoting social innovation and humanitarian service in the areas of sustainability; racial, socio-economic, and sex/gender justice; the arts; and science/technology. Each colloquium will run online for a 12-week period.

During the summer:

In order to become well versed in our pedagogy and ethos, the Program Director will act as Assistant Program Director in Camp Rising Sun 2023. CRS is our flagship full scholarship ethical leadership program, which welcomes 140 teenagers from all over the world each summer. In their capacity as Assistant Program Director, the candidate will:

  • Provide positive leadership to the summer camp program alongside the Camp Director, and act as Camp Director in their absence.
  • Assist in the supervision, training, evaluation, and mentorship of the CRS seasonal staff, as well as with the facilitation of staff meetings and scheduling.
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations.
  • Work closely with the camp director and rest of the staff to supervise quality programming aligned with LAJF’s mission and goals.
  • Desired, but not essential: Serving as the Wellbeing Counselor/Camp Social Worker during CRS, if the candidate has a mental health training. See full description here.
  • Maintain sensitive camper and staff records.

With regard to program delivery, the Program Director’s responsibilities include:

  • Seasonal staff and volunteer recruitment, hiring, and management
  • Participant recruitment and enrollment, with the support of our international participant selection network, including communicating with parents.
  • Managing a program budget
  • Proactively seeking mechanisms to fund programs such as grants, sponsorships and fee-based initiatives
  • Seeking meaningful partnerships with schools and community organizations.
  • Writing about program(s) for publications and fundraising purposes
  • Overseeing meaningful evaluation of program(s) with the purpose of improvement.
  • Working with the advancement team to build a stronger awareness of our programs and initiatives.
  • Working with operations staff to ensure our facilities meet the needs of the program

With regard to program development, responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with the Program Team lead and our consultants to finalize the development of our programs under construction (including, curriculum development, business plans, outreach plans, etc.)
  • Leading the implementation of a new program including staff hiring, participant enrollment, and logistical planning.
  • Leading the program on the ground.

Qualifications:

In the coming years, we will be focusing our energy on program growth and development. Your specific background and skills may vary. We believe that the successful candidate may have the following:

Required:

  • 3 years of experience working with youth programs (after-school program, summer camp, school admin, gap year, exchange programs, virtual programs, or similar)
  • Experience managing relationships with program participant families
  • Experience teaching social justice, ethics and leadership to a diverse group of learners
  • Familiarity with critical race theory, multicultural education, intercultural communication and/or social work practice.
  • Compassion, empathy and welcoming nature
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (or willingness for coaching).
  • Ability and willingness to facilitate and participate in discussions about intersectionality and identity.
  • Strong critical self-reflection skills and openness to feedback
  • Experience with volunteer leadership/management.
  • Must be vaccinated against Covid 19

Desired:

  • Experience supervising staff
  • Experience in developing, implementing, managing and evaluating new programs.
  • Demonstrated experience marketing programs internationally
  • Possess an LMSW from an accredited program and accompanying licensure for New York State

Salary and Benefits:

  • Paid sick time and vacation
  • Eligible for 401K employer contributions after one year of employment (self-contributions after 4-months)
  • Possibility of partial contribution to employer health insurance
  • Salary: $60-65,000 based on experience.
