TEENS, Inc. at Lookout Academy, a vibrant and nationally-recognized youth-serving organization, is accepting applications for an experienced and full-time Special Education Teacher to work with incarcerated teens and young adult men on the Campus at Lookout Mountain.

• Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive and supportive learning environment.
• Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to support and facilitate student learning
• Instruct students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques and strategies to reinforce learning and to meet students' varying needs and interests.
• Teach socially acceptable behavior, as determined by the student's’ individualized education programs (IEPs) by employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system.
• Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies.
• Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining an environment conducive to learning for all students.
• Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, behavioral health specialists, DYS staff, and other professionals to develop individualized education programs (IEPs) designed to promote students' educational, physical, and social/emotional development.
• Assist in collection of data for providing appropriate classroom interventions
• Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
• Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development activities, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities.
• Support classrooms and the school by substituting when needed in the general and/or special education environment.
• Provide case management services for students with Individual Education Plans.
• Provide consultation services to other school staff regarding special education students, differentiation, accommodations and modifications.
• Maintain accurate student records including contact minutes, service minutes, and progress toward IEP goals and objectives.
• Write IEP’s and participate in IEP meetings.
• Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment - maintain accurate count of all materials.
• Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students through a variety of assessment measures and use information to adjust teaching strategies.
• Assign and grade class work, homework, tests and assignments.
• Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development.
• Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, DYS policies and school regulations.
• Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.
• Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures and adhering to all DYS policies and procedures..
• Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school and DYS.
• Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, central dining, campus grounds, hallways, restrooms, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
• Reports incidents in the appropriate DYS database(s) (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, zero tolerance offenses etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to state law and DYS policies.
• Responds to inquires from a variety of sources (e.g. other teachers, parents, administrators, students, central office staff, etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction. Supports other classrooms as needed
• Participate in extracurricular activities such as graduations, honor roll assemblies, and other events as determined.
• Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, DYS staff, Behavioral Health Specialists, parents and a variety of community resources (client managers, etc.) for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
